Mirza wins the Couvert for the second time!

Stable star and no stranger to this news page, Mirza made another trip to France a valuable one when making virtually all under Frankie Dettori.  The former jockey may have hit the headlines for the wrong reasons regarding Treve but he hits the right headlines on Mirza now unbeaten on him, making it two from two.

Congratulations to all connections, Chris, Lesley, Robbie and the whole Mills family whose breeding operation provides them with great days out, and also to Andrew who travelled and rides Mirza most days, some say Mirza is his best friend!

It is clear the talent for winning this race runs in the family as Mirza's dam, Millyant also won this race twice for the same connections.  Mirza is entered in the Prix De L'Abbaye sprint on the same card as the Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe on the 5th October and all being well he will head back to Paris for that.

Rawoof tackles France

Rawoof (pictured right), a three year-old filly by Nayef bought out of Ed Dunlop's stable at the July sales by Dwayne and Wendyll Woods in the name of their breeding operation Brook Stud Bloodstock runs in Chantilly tomorrow in a bid to add black-type to a short and successful career with us.

Rawoof made her debut for us a little over two weeks ago when getting off the mark in a one mile, three furlong handicap at Yarmouth to score in decisive fashion by ten lengths off a rating of 70.  The handicapper was suitably impressed by the performance and put her up fifteen pounds so this is the natural progression to aim for black-type for a filly who's future lies in the paddocks of the Cheveley based stud.

She left the yard at 4am this morning (Monday 8th September) and runs in the Prix Des Tourelles, a listed race over one mile and two furlongs at 12.30pm (UK time) tomorrow.  A link to the race card, courtesy of Ze-Turf can be found by clicking here. We are hopeful that At the Races will show the race live, but as ever this is rarely confirmed.  Good luck (Merde!) to Dwayne, Wendyll and Sarah Nash who looks after her, rides her and has travelled her. A weekend full of nearly's...

This news section is usually saved for just winners but after the weekend's exploits it would seem almost unfair that they go unnoticed. If winners are goals then this weekend was a hit-the-crossbar kind of weekend.

Firstly, stable star Mirza proved yet again that he is in fine health this year when finishing second in the Listed Beverley Bullet to Group One placed Pearl Secret.  This was followed up little more than an hour later when Calm Attitude continued her rise through the ranks. At one point last year she held a rating of 55, she is now rated in the 80's and sure to rise again after this fine run.  Off a light weight and ridden by the stable's former apprentice Noel Garbutt she ran a fine race finishing second.  She will clearly benefit from a light weight in these sorts of handicaps and as always the soft ground is key to her.

Sunday saw Derek Willis' Cape Factor (pictured right winning a Listed race at Newmarket last year) make the long trip to Baden-Baden worthwhile.  Running in the Listed Coolmore Stud Baden-Baden Cup and ridden by Chris Catlin she ran a great race in her favoured rain-softened ground to finish second, beaten a neck to Mark Prescott's Athenian.

The three runners collected in excess of £25,000 between them as well as some more invaluable black-type for Cape Factor and Mirza.  Rae will continue to look for good opportunities both here and overseas for them as well as others.  Keep an eye on our race-entries page to keep up-to-date with our overseas entries.

Rawoof off the mark!

Rawoof, a three year old filly bought out of Ed Dunlop's yard by owner-breeders Dwayne and Wendyll Woods, collectively known as and owners of Cheveley based Brook Stud Bloodstock, made all this afternoon at Yarmouth under Chris Catlin to score in pretty decisive fashion.

She has shown promise at home on the gallops and that was converted into a success today, drawn wide she was always up with the pace before tacking over before the bend.  She increased the pace a little over four furlongs out and soon had the race favourites in trouble. She ran on under gentle riding by Chris Catlin to win by a comfortable ten lengths.

Congratulations to her owners, Dwayne and Wendyll Woods and Sarah Nash who looks after and rides her (pictured above) most days.  This was her first time racing with us after joining from Ed Dunlops and her first winner for us. Long may that strike rate continue!
