All looked set fair at the weekend for another good run from Bahia Breeze in the Group 2 Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville on Sunday, with the race looking as though it was the sort she could win, and trip, company and crucially ground being in her favour. But you still need that vital bit of luck in running and poor old Bahia just didn't get it on Sunday. They started off at a reasonable pace and she slotted in behind the favourite, then Frankie Dettori on the Godolphin horse Folk Opera slowed the pace with a view to sprinting off the final turn. This (unfortunately) he did very successfully, with Bahia left in a pocket behind the favourite and hemmed in left and right. By the time jockey Ryan Moore got her out, there were 100 yards to go and she made up about 3 lengths but still could not get there. She ran a great race, is in great form and even more annoyingly Ryan reported that she would have won if he could have got out earlier. Never has a filly so much deserved a Group win. This year will be her last hurrah so Rae will be doing everything possible to ensure that she achieves it before the end of the season. Otherwise it has been a quiet week for the yard for runners with Pretty Officer travelling like a winner at Great Leighs but unfortunately not finding much under pressure and Classic Lass and Filligree declared at Sandown tomorrow and Saturday respectively. |
