Snow hampering training in Newmarket 08/02/2009

1 February should herald the opening of the grass canters at Newmarket and mark the start of cantering away the very fresh horses who spent the last month trotting. However the weather has been doing its worst all over the country for the last week, so even if the grass had been opened by Jockey Club Estates it would not have been usable under the blanket of snow and ice which has enveloped Newmarket. The indoor ride has proved invaluable during the cold snap and while some yards have reportedly been unable to get horses out at all, ours have been kept moving throughout, the majority of them starting cantering later in the week. The last thing Rae wants is to have horses falling over on the ice or getting loose, so he has been very careful about what horses he sends out when and the company they keep, as one horse jumping about can cause the kind of domino effect the lads dread and that might leave one of them sitting on the ground! Serious Attitude did a steady canter on Saturday in company with Si Belle. She was ridden out in the barn this morning by her trainer.
